Weston glad to see West Van council reconsider LNG tanker motion

West Vancouver, Sunshine Coast MP John Weston says he’s glad West Van City Council is going to re-consider a motion opposing LNG tankers in Howe Sound.
Other councils in Weston’s riding, including Gibsons, the Sunshine Coast Regional District and Bowen Island have passed similar motions in response to plans for an LNG facility at Woodfibre.
Weston says he took the rare step of publicly criticizing the West Van motion because, as a resident, he felt they should have given the company a chance to make its case.
None of the other councils with “no LNG tankers” motions on the books have, so far, suggested they’ll reconsider.
Weston also says his criticism of West Van Council’s motion shouldn’t be taken as carte blanche support for the idea of LNG development, he just feels Council should hear from both sides and let the approval process play out.
And, Weston says he remains committed to working with the Future of Howe Sound Society on getting a comprehensive land use plan for the Sound.  He’s planning to bring the parliamentary secretary for the Environment Minister to meet with the Society on Monday as they try to get federal funding to help create the plan.
