Changes to water sharing deal with Lantzville approved by Nanaimo Council

The vote was close Monday night but Nanaimo Council has approved changes to a water sharing agreement with Lantzville.

Lantzville will pay the city $1.3 million to connect 225 homes to the city’s water system, plus a hookup cost for each that’s the same as the water connection development cost paid by Nanaimo residents. As many as 50 hookups not used can be carried over to the following year.

Water rates for Lantzville residents will go up at the same rate as the fees paid by Nanaimo residents as they increase over time.

Nanaimo Councillor Bill Bestwick argued against it, saying he has doubt Lantzville really is facing a water shortage, and he thinks Nanaimo’s getting a raw deal.

Lantzville has the option to renew the deal after 20 years. The water sharing agreement still needs Lantzville’s stamp of approval.
