Dying Nanaimo woman secures new housing after being evicted

A woman who was evicted from her old rental now has a new place to stay thanks to support from the community.

Sharon Kowalchuk was recently declared palliative by her doctor, and evicted from her rental unit in early March.

She was able to raise $35,154 through a GoFundMe thanks to community support.

As of March 13th, Kowalchuk and her husband have been able to acquire housing, and will be able to move in some time in April.

“Thank you each and every single one of you who donated. I never could have imagined how good this campaign would go. From the bottom of my heart. THANK YOU,” wrote Support Worker Shawn Nickerson on the GoFundMe.

Meanwhile, the Compliance and Enforcement Unit handling this case is interested in hearing from tenants who may have lived in the building between January and February 2023.

Those with info they believe might help the CEU’s investigation are asked to contact them at 1-800-665-8779 (the contact centre for the RTB) or through email ([email protected]).
