Derelict vessel removed by Nanaimo Port Authority

A derelict boat near the Dinghy Dock on Protection Island was removed over the weekend.
The Nanaimo Port Authority had the Valkyrian II hauled away. It had been sitting half-submerged near the shore since October.
“This vessel has been a problem for users of the Nanaimo Harbour and, specifically, for Protection Island residents for many months,” said NPA President Bernie Dumas, who called it an environmental hazard. “This level of irresponsibility cannot be tolerated and has a negative effect on the community and on visitors who invest in a vacation in our beautiful harbour. While we are spending time and money dealing with this vessel, we are not investing in projects that move our community forward.”
The NPA says the owner will be held accountable, and they’re getting ready to take legal action to get back the money spent on the cleanup operation.
