Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society planning demonstration outside City Hall

The Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society is hosting a demonstration this afternoon outside the City of Nanaimo Annex behind City Hall on Dunsmuir St at 1:00pm.

The engineering firm Golder Associates has tabled two potential options to fix up the Colliery Dams, each costing between $7 and $8 million.

The Society’s Jeff Soloman says both would be invasive and expensive, so they’re speaking out.

Soloman says despite the Society’s involvement in the Colliery Dams technical committee, their concerns have been largely ignored in the final reports.

Soloman says they want the City to take their time when it comes to deciding how to proceed. He says they also want the City to remove all the warning signs below the dams, which he says create an unnecessary sense of urgency.

Meanwhile, the City wants to make a decision of how to fix up the dams so construction can take place next summer.
