Wheelchair users able to roll down Departure Bay beach with new mat

A new accessibility mat has made it so wheelchair users or those with mobility issues can reach the Departure Bay beach’s waters.

The Mobi-Mat is a seasonally-installed feature next to the Kin Hut Activity Centre. It’s role is to provide a non-slip walkway made from recycled material for those on wheels.

“The installation of the Mobi-Mat at Departure Bay Beach is another example of how the City of Nanaimo is working to make accessibility improvements,” said Mayor Leonard Krog. “It is helpful for those in wheelchairs, those with strollers or those with wagons or kayak trailers, and I am sure it will be well used by many members of our community.”

The city recommends making sure you have assistance going down the mat, because of the uneven and rocky shore it covers.

It will remain for the rest of the summer season, and if it’s seen as a success, may be installed at other beaches as well.
