Vancouver Island University getting $837,000 to expand trades programs

Vancouver Island University is one of 14 post-secondary institutions in the province getting a financial boost from the province to expand their trades programs.

Amrik Virk, BC’s Minister of Advanced Education, was in Nanaimo on Thursday afternoon to announce that VIU’s getting a chunk of the $6.8 million the province is handing out as part of their BC Skills for Jobs Blueprint.

Virk says they’re creating a total of 1,424 new trades seats in the province. Those positions will help prepare students for jobs in the LNG sector and other industries.

The money will create 132 new training seats at VIU, including 80 welder and 36 electrician foundation seats and 16 heavy-duty-equipment mechanic apprenticeship seats.
