Mid-island cities offer cooling tips, cooling centres during heat wave

Various cooling centres on central Vancouver Island have opened for a short-term heat wave.

The heat warning issued by Environment Canada for today and tomorrow forecasts temperatures up to 35 degrees Celsius inland, with nighttime lows between 16 and 18.

The City of Nanaimo is recommending residents relocate to stay cool, put up external window covers to block the sun, and keep windows closed between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

They add dressing for the weather and finding swimming areas are other good ways of staying cool during the heat.

Cooling centres are open at the Unitarian Shower Program located at 110 Wall Street from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the Salvation Army New Hope Centre at 19 Nicol Street from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The City of Campbell River will have its Willow Point Splash park open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. They recommend residents have a heat safety plan and identify cool zones.

Centres are also open in the Town of Comox and the City of Courtenay, with the Comox Community Centre’s misting tent and sprinkler available from 1 to 5 p.m.

The Rotary Splash park at the Comox Marina will be available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the Rotary Splash Park at Lewis Park will also be open along with the outdoor pool and wading pool.

The Comox Valley Sports Centre and the Aquatic Centre will also be open in the lobby for cooling.

The heat wave is expected to be short-lived, according to Environment Canada, with temperatures cooling on Friday.
