Bay doors smashed, vehicles stolen from Nanaimo auto garage

Nanaimo RCMP say thieves smashed through bay doors, stealing two vehicles from a local auto garage early Tuesday morning.

The incident happened at around 3:30 a.m. at the Nanaimo Midas off of Island Highway, according to Cst. Gary O’Brien of Nanaimo RCMP.

O’Brien says it appears a rock was thrown through the bay windows to get inside. Two vehicles were then started up, a white 2019 Ford F-350 and a black older model Subaru Forester, and smashed through garage bay doors before driving off.

Nanaimo RCMP are asking for information from anyone who may have been in the area.

“We believe the vehicles were probably taken off at a high rate of speed and caused a significant amount of noise,” said O’Brien. “So, if anybody was in around the area they would certainly have heard that and we need to hear from them.”

O’Brien adds there would be significant damage to both vehicles after smashing through the doors. He says the Subaru has licence plate number LF1 61C.

Nanaimo Midas owner Kevin Goldsbury says the smashed doors will likely cost thousands to replace, but security has become a bigger concern.

“It’s a little discouraging,” said Goldsbury. “It seems like [you’re] doing the best you can to [be] secure, especially in this case you think you’d be pretty safe inside with the doors locked.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file No. 2022-27497.
