Nanaimo RCMP are looking for a firearm in connection to a shooting earlier this week.
Officers say the shooting left a 43-year-old man in hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.
The incident happened on Aug. 1 at around 3:30 p.m. in the area of Northfield Road and Nanaimo Parkway, according to RCMP. They say they were called after several motorists saw an individual lying on the west side of the highway.
Witnesses gave first aid to the victim for what looked like gunshot wounds until paramedics arrived, according to RCMP. They say he was taken to the hospital before being airlifted to a hospital in Victoria.
Officers say they were able to identify a suspect – a 48-year-old man – arrested him and took him into custody shortly afterwards.
A search warrant was carried out Tuesday at an encampment where the suspect lives, according to RCMP, but the weapon was not found.
Nanaimo RCMP describe the weapon to be a sawed-off shotgun that may be in the area of Boxwood Road and Northfield Road.
If found, officers ask you to not touch the weapon and call either 911 or the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
