2 killed in small plane crash near Nanaimo

The Transportation Safety Board is continuing its investigation into Saturday’s deadly plane crash near Nanaimo.

2 people were killed when a small kit-built plane (an Avid amphibian, similar to the one shown in the Wikipedia image above) crashed into the 14th fairway at Cottonwood Golf Course, not far from the Nanaimo Airport.  The TSB’s Bill Yearwood says weather conditions were good, and it appears the pilot lost control not long after taking off.

Coast FM’s Hilary Eastmure spoke with Cottonwood owner Ted Kaese:

The TSB says it will work with the RCMP and the Coroners Service on the investigation.  The people who died were the pilot and a passenger; the only people on board.

They’ve been identified as 73 year-old Michael Weir of Salt Spring Island and 50 year-old Gerald Thom of Youbou.
