$1-million in federal money for new safety equipment at YCD

The federal government is putting up just over a million dollars for improvements at the Nanaimo Airport.
Federal Transportation Minister Lisa Raitt was at the airport Tuesday morning for the announcement, one of several stops she’s making on a visit to BC.
The airport will use the $1,000,313 to buy a new runway sweeper and a specialized Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Vehicle.
The money comes through Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program, which has provided around $3-million for safety upgrades at the Nanaimo Airport over the years.
“The record-setting increase in passenger numbers in the past year underscores why safety continues to be the highest priority at the Nanaimo Airport,” says YCD President and CEO Mike Hooper who adds the new fire truck is going to help with the transition to a full, on site, fire department.
Hooper says upgrading their runway sweeper will improve all-weather performance.
