Chair of Waterfront Initiative wants to see a development corporation set up for Wellcox land

The man who led efforts to draft a plan for the future of Nanaimo’s Wellcox Railyard doesn’t want to see that plan forgotten.
The City bought the 11 hectare property from CP last year, for 3.4 million dollars.
David Whitty, chair of the South Downtown Waterfront Initiative, was in front of City Council yesterday.  He says “tabling” the report shouldn’t be the end… but the beginning of careful management of what happens on that land.
Whitty is suggesting the City set up a special development corporation, something he says has worked well in other places.  Councillors didn’t tackle that idea, but they did vote to have the committee carry on providing advice – under new terms.
