Lots of talk about the Wellcox lands on Council agenda

Nanaimo City Council is going to be talking about the future of the City’s newly acquired property on the waterfront at their Monday meeting.
The City bought around 11 hectares of the Wellcox Railyard from CP for $3.4 million.
The area’s history of industrial activity means it’s likely there’s some soil or water contamination, so the City is going to have to hire experts to do a study.  The cost is likely to be nearly 300 thousand dollars, but 175 thousand will be covered by a federal grant according to a staff report coming to Council Monday.
Council is also slated to discuss ending the lease of Island Pallet Solutions, one of the tenants on the land.
And they’ll be hearing from the chair of the South Downtown Waterfront Initiative, which was set up to look at future uses for the land.
