Gibsons Council passes motion against LNG tankers

Town Councillors in Gibsons don’t want to see LNG tankers plying the waters of Howe Sound and Georgia Strait.
They’ve given unanimous support to a motion calling on the federal government to ban the passage of tankers in those waters, and they’re calling on other communities around the Salish Sea to follow suit.
Councillor Dan Bouman put forward the motion, inspired by a recent presentation from LNG opponent, and Bowyer Island resident Eoin Finn.  Finn has been making the rounds of local governments speaking out against the proposed Woodfibre LNG plant
The motion says LNG tankers would interfere with marine traffic, put ecologically sensitive areas at risk, and have a negative impact on development.
Gibsons is hoping motions from other councils will apply to Malaspina, Georgia, Juan de Fuca and Haro Straits.
Finn, meanwhile, is continuing his tour of local governments.
He’ll be speaking to Directors at the Sunshine Coast Regional District Thursday morning and at an Elphinstone Electors’ Association event at 2pm at the Gibsons & Area Community Centre.
