Hot weather continues, but heat wave has peaked

Environment Canada says the heat wave likely peaked on Sunday, but temperatures in the high 20s will continue this week.
Despite the heat, we didn’t break any records over the weekend for Nanaimo or the Sunshine Coast. Sunday’s high of 32.8 on the Sunshine Coast matched the mark set in 1961.
The biggest worry from the hot, dry conditions is wildfires.
Crews from the Coastal Fire Centre were called in to help deal with two small, but potentially dangerous fires on the Island over the weekend.
One that started at the Gold River landfill, and one in Spectacle Lake Provincial Park, south of Shawnigan Lake.  Teams were on standby to evacuate nearby homes in both cases, but in the end it wasn’t necessary.
Fire danger ratings have now hit “high” throughout most of the area.
