Kidney Walk coming up in Nanaimo on Aug 17

One out of ten people in BC suffers from chronic kidney disease, according to the BC branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Statistics like that are why the Foundation is holding 25 Kidney Walks in communities across the province in August, including six on Vancouver Island.

The BC branch of the Kidney Foundation was at Maffeo Sutton Park in Nanaimo on Thursday to raise awareness about the events happening across island, starting in exactly a month. The first few, in places like the Cowichan Valley and Port Alberni, are August 10. Nanaimo’s is set for Sunday, August 17th.

Barb Valentine is the Foundation’s BC Branch Manager for Community Initiatives. She says over 90 per cent of people in BC support organ donation but fewer than 20 per cent have actually registered online to be an organ donor.

Valentine says the Kidney Walks are about raising awareness and clearing up those common misconceptions, and raising money to support the Kidney Foundation. You can find out more online and register to participate at www.kidneywalkinbc.ca
