September report expected to clarify contamination issues at Hyak site in Gibsons

More questions about how contamination on a property slated for development in Gibsons is being dealt with, and Town officials say answers are coming.
The Hyak Marine site on the waterfront is known to be contaminated after years of industrial activity, and it will have to be cleaned up if a proposed hotel/conference centre goes ahead.
But some say it’s not clear if the Environment Ministry or the Town is supposed to be making sure the contamination is handled properly
And, Councillor Dan Bouman says a May 22nd e-mail from the Ministry doesn’t really answer that question.
The e-mail says the Town can join the Ministry’s “site profile process” or create its own process if it’s “concerned about issuing permits on potentially contaminated land”.
A local environmental consultant has filed a complaint with the Environment Ministry about the lack of clarity over how that will be managed.
Last night the public also raised questions about liability.  Town CAO Manny Machado responded, saying details will come in a report due in September.
