Pender Harbour Garden Club wants their "brown gold" back

The Pender Harbour Garden Club is hoping the Sunshine Coast Regional District will agree to go back to letting some green waste at the landfill become free mulch.

That’s what used to happen, until a deal between the SCRD and Salish Soils saw the green waste take to Sechelt for use by the company.

On Thursday, Ron Knight of the Garden Club made the case that returning the free mulch will give people an incentive to go to the trouble of dropping off green waste, leading to less water use and backyard burning. He also says local gardeners miss the high quality material.

Knight says getting loads of commercial mulch hauled up from Sechelt is too expensive for many gardeners.

SCRD Directors are willing to look at the idea, but they want to be sure it fits with their contract with Salish Soils and won’t lead to the spread of invasive plants.
