Nanaimo Council to vote on rescinding Leadercast cancellation

After coming under fire for voting to cancel an event at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, Nanaimo City Council is holding a special open committee meeting to rescind that motion.

Council voted May 5 to cancel the Leadercast conference, based on the discriminatory views of one of the sponsors, Chick-fil-A. The owner has repeatedly spoken out against same-sex marriage.

But the cancellation got the attention of Sun News TV Host Ezra Levant, who devoted an entire episode of his show to raking Nanaimo Councillors over the coals for the decision. Levant paid a visit to Nanaimo on Wednesday and spoke to a group outside City Hall.

Councillor Bill McKay, the only one to vote against the cancellation, spoke to Levant and said he wants the motion rescinded.

McKay said the Charter doesn’t allow for reconsideration, since the motion was acted upon, so rescinding it is the only option.

It looks like McKay got his wish. Nanaimo Council will be meeting to vote on rescinding the motion on Thursday at 5:00pm at the Shaw Auditorium.
