Nanaimo’s Community Boathouse on Long Lake is getting a big boost from Kraft Canada.
The Nanaimo Canoe and Kayak Club and the Rowing Club applied to be included on the Kraft Celebration Tour. Nanaimo has been selected as one of the Top 10 communities, which comes with a $25,000 cheque.
Nanaimo Canoe and Kayak Club Commodore Joyce Mark says their cinder-block boathouse is crumbling and the rowing club operates out of a small trailer, so their current home is less than ideal.
Mark says the public washrooms also need to be upgraded so they can be open year-round. She says they have tried to raise money before but it has been a huge challenge. It will cost about $600,000 to build the facility they’re envisioning, but Mark says $25,000 will be a big step in the right direction.
Mark says they’re hoping the community will rally and vote for them during the online potion of the contest on July 21 and 22. The winning community will get another $75,000. She says they’re meeting with the Kraft tour committee next week to figure out the next steps.
TSN Sportscentre will also be broadcasting live from Nanaimo on Saturday, August 16 as part of the Kraft Celebration Tour.
