No pickets outside schools during BC Summer Games

The BC Summer Games won’t be impacted by the ongoing teachers strike.

Athletes will be staying and competing at several school facilities, but the Nanaimo District Teachers Association says teachers will not picket any of the sites during the games.

An open letter from the NDTA and the BC Summer Games says “We are encouraged that negotiations between the BCTF and the province continue, and are hopeful that a negotiated settlement can be reached soon. In this spirit of cooperation and solidarity with the many teachers and other participants from around the province, the Nanaimo Teachers’ Association agrees to not picket any sites of the Summer Games.”

In fact, many Nanaimo teachers will be volunteering to help with the BC Games, from July 17-20th. The event is expected to draw more than 3,000 athletes and coaches to Nanaimo, and organizers say they need about 3,200 volunteers.
