Passenger numbers up at Nanaimo airport

Passenger numbers are flying high at the Nanaimo airport.

Since WestJet launched their direct service to Calgary on June 24 of 2013, the number of people flying in and out of the airport has been steadily climbing.

More than 22,500 passengers passed through the airport in May, which is 5000 more than the same month the year before. There was also a 35 per cent increase in passenger numbers between January and May compared to the previous year.

The airport hopes to add more direct flights to parts of Western Canada. Airport CEO Mike Hooper says plans to connect Edmonton and Nanaimo have fallen through, but carriers may be adding more daily flights to existing routes over the course of the next year.
