Men rescued after canoe capsizes at Pipers Lagoon

A canoe capsized at Pipers Lagoon on Saturday, sending two men into the choppy water.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Martin Drakely says the pair, both in their mid-twenties, got into some rough water and decided to turn around but the canoe flipped. A nearby fishing boat came to the rescue and pulled them from the water.

Drakely says it’s fortunate the men were wearing PFDs, and it’s an important reminder for other boaters.

And speaking of water safety, the City of Nanaimo says lifeguards will be on duty daily starting today at Westwood Lake Park, from 12:00-6:00pm. The park is open on Canada day, but all other city facilities will be closed.
