Sunshine Coast RCMP are warning residents to be wary after two recent fraud attempts.
On June 19, a resident reported getting a call from someone claiming to be from “Cops for Kids.” After giving her credit card information to make a donation, she looked up the company online and discovered they don’t solicit donations over the phone.
She was told to cancel her credit card.
Then on June 21, a local real estate company reported a possible fraud after receiving an unsolicited cheque for a large amount of money from a someone claiming to be an “investor” from the United Kingdom.
The agent told them it wasn’t necessary at this stage. Then the agent received a cheque from the Canadian Olympic Committee, claiming to be on behalf of the mystery investor.
The agent contacted the COC and confirmed it was fraudulent. RCMPO say this was a variation on a common overpayment scam.
