Consultant raises concerns about contamination at Gibsons property

An environmental consultant is raising a red flag over contamination on a property in Gibsons Harbour.
Andre Sobolewski of Clear Coast Consulting says a recent assessment of the Hyak Marine site ignored a chemical called Tributyltin.
The once-common anti-fouling treatment for boat hulls is now banned.
The site is earmarked for a potential conference centre/hotel development, but Sobolewski says this isn’t about that debate; it’s about liability if the contamination isn’t dealt with properly.
Mayor Wayne Rowe says it’s his understanding the Town wouldn’t be liable, but they’re now working to clarify where Gibsons stands in the Ministry of Environment’s “Site Profile Process”.
