City Council backing new deal to keep Centre Stage going

Looks like it’s not curtains for Nanaimo Centre Stage after all.

City Council is backing a 3 year agreement with the newly formed Harbour City Theatre Alliance to manage the rehearsal and performance space at 25 Victoria Road.  It’s going to pay them $11,350 a year.

Jim Taylor of the Nanaimo Ratepayers Association isn’t giving the deal a very good review, he threw the proverbial tomatoes, calling it a waste of taxpayer dollars.

But Mayor John Ruttan says it’s a vital cultural space.

Ruttan also says the Port Theatre will hopefully provide an alternative, when it expands in the future.

The agreement with Harbour City Theatre Alliance (which includes Centre Stage users Schmooze Productions and In Other Words Theatre)  passed in a 6-3 vote.
