Talks continue, but local school districts treating Friday as last day of class

Education Minister Peter Fassbender says the government is prepared to bargain with teachers through the weekend to avoid a full-scale strike. And NDP Education Critic Rob Fleming is urging both sides to ‘get serious’ about talks over the weekend. But school districts in our area are treating this like the last day of classes for the year. The BCTF plans to hold a province-wide “study session” on Monday and start a full-scale strike on Tuesday if there’s no deal.

Meanwhile the Labour Relations Board has declared exams for grades 10 through 12, and submitting grade 12 final marks essential services.
SD 46 superintendent Patrick Bocking says the ruling will come as a relief for senior students.
Both school districts say graduation ceremonies will go ahead as planned, although teachers may not be participating.  Bocking says on the Sunshine Coast they’re hoping if teachers are on strike they’ll still be at the ceremonies as part of the audience.
