RCMP investigating arson at Hackett Park

Sunshine Coast RCMP are investigating after a fire was started inside the women’s washroom at Hackett Park just before 3:30am on Wed, June 11.

They got a report about mischief at the park and arrived just in time to see some youths running away onto Dolphin Avenue.

An intoxicated woman was found in the area and detained. That’s when police spotted smoke coming from the women’s washroom. The Sechelt Fire Department put it out, but not before it caused a significant amount of smoke damage and some interior damage.

The Hackett Park washrooms have been the target of multiple reports of mischief and arson over the years causing thousands of dollars in damage. says Sgt. Steve Chubey. This act in particular was extremely careless and could have resulted in severe damage to infrastructure or worse, injuries to emergency crews or civilians.

RCMP have seized surveillance video from the area and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Sunshine Coast RCMP or BC Crime Stoppers.
