Nanaimo rolls out new strategy to tackle invasive plants

Invasive plants, beware! Nanaimo has a new InvasiveĀ Plant Management Strategy to eliminate undesirable species from parks and private properties across the city.

It was approved by Council this week.

One group is already waging a war against Scotch broom. Broombusters founder Joanne Sales told Council volunteers have spent 400 hours removing broom from NanaimoĀ since May 1st.

SalesĀ says they’re happy to lend a hand but they’re asking the City for more support.

Council says it will get back to Broombusters on their request.

The City’s Environmental Planner, meanwhile, says the Invasive Plant Management Strategy includes a review of property maitenace bylaws, to potentially put more onus on landowners.
