Gibsons boil water advisory continues; Mayor says communication could have been better

Gibsons residents packed the Market Building for an update on the boil water advisory put in place because of e-coli contamination.
A lot of the questions and concerns raised at Tuesday night’s committee meeting were around how the Town got the word out June 6th, when Vancouver Coastal Health ordered the advisory.  Mayor Wayne Rowe admits it could have been done better.
Director of Engineering Dave Newman says they still haven’t found the “smoking gun”, but know one thing for certain.
Newman says they’ve had some good news, with one round of samples coming back negative for contamination, but getting the all clear will require a whole series of tests to come back clean.
In the meantime, work continues to decontaminate the system, including “super chlorinating” the Parkland Reservoir and flushing the system with chlorinated water from the Sunshine Coast Regional District supply.

The boil water advisory affects people in Zones 1 and 2.  That’s anywhere in Town boundaries that’s not part of the Sunshine Coast Regional District water system, roughly the area south of Gibsons Way and east of North Road (see map below).  The Town has also released a new FAQ.

After brief run on bottled water supplies several stores in Gibsons have brought in extra.  The Gibsons Recycling Depot, which is outside the boil water area, is offering to fill containers for people.

Vancouver Coastal Health is providing advice on what to do while the advisory remains in place
