Nanaimo Council to debate BC Fed's call for mandatory BC ship-building program

Nanaimo Councillor Diane Brennan is hoping to convince others on Council to get on Board with the BC Federation of Labour’s call to have ferries and other government-owned ships built here in BC.
The Federation has been asking local councils to put pressure on the province.  The issue came up recently in Sechelt, but councillors there couldn’t agree on taking stand.
Councillor Chris Moore says he’d love to see a strong shipbuilding sector, but without government interference.
The Sechelt councillors who back the idea, like Alice Lutes, point to possible economic benefits for the region.
So far, Sechelt and Nanaimo are the only Councils to consider the Federation’s request.
