Some good news for bee-keepers in the Nanaimo area.
A nest containing Asian giant hornets has been destroyed in Robin’s Park in Nanaimo.
The BC Agriculture Ministry says a provincial entomologist and a group of local bee-keepers eradicated the nest using carbon dioxide.
All hornets, including the queen, have been removed.
There is a report of a second giant hornet nest found in Nanaimo and the location is being checked to verify that report.
In August, three large insects that had been found in the Nanaimo area were confirmed to be Asian giant hornets.
The hornets are an invasive species. They hunt honey bees and are said to be able to quickly destroy a honeybee hive.
