Filmmakers eager to share documentary about the Salish Sea

A documentary about the health of the Salish Sea is being shown in Victoria tonight ahead of World Oceans Day on Sunday. Then the filmmakers are offering it to community groups wanting to host their own screening.

“Reaching Blue” by Ian Hinkle and Andy Robertson was filmed with support from Ocean Networks Canada. Hinkle says it’s meant to illustrate the impact of climate change, both locally and globally.

Hinkle says the film documents the experiences of an oyster farmer in Desolation Sound, a scientist and a writer. He says what’s happening in the Salish Sea is an illustration of what’s taking place in the world’s oceans.

Hinkle explains that the film is about “hope beneath the surface”, meaning the more people know, the more of a positive impact they can have.

The 20-minute film will be made available to universities, institutions and non-profit groups wanting to host a public screening, as a way to prompt discussions about the future of the oceans. An hour-long version, including footage crowdsourced from 15 cinematographers, will be shown on CBC TV in September.
