Boil water advisory continues in Town of Gibsons

Much of the Town of Gibsons remains under a boil-water advisory, after weekend testing continued to come back positive for e-coli.
The advisory affects people in Zones 1 and 2.
That’s anywhere in Town boundaries that’s not part of the Sunshine Coast Regional District water system, roughly the area south of Gibsons Way and east of North Road (see map below)

Vancouver Coastal Health says if you are in Zones 1 or 2 you should boil water for at least one minute before using it.
People in Zone 3 do not have to follow these precautions, but if you’re not sure which zone you’re in you should boil your water.
Mayor Wayne Rowe says they’re still trying to track down the source of the contamination, which was first detected at the Parkland Reservoir (pictured above)  Rowe says they do know the water supply, the Town’s aquifer, is not contaminated; the problem is somewhere in the distribution system
However, Town officials say Well #1 is not an option for people looking to fill water bottles, and it’s been shut off.
Vancouver Coastal Health says there have been no reported illnesses.

Rowe has also issued the following official statement on the situation:

I’m writing to provide an update on the Boil Water Notice since it went into effect Friday afternoon, following a finding, during routine testing, of contamination in our drinking water systems. As soon as we were informed of the results of the testing, we immediately began to notify residents and businesses. In dealing with the issue, the Town followed the required best practices specified by the Vancouver Health Authority’s Drinking Water Officer. Zone 1 and 2 of the systems were isolated, and decontamination began immediately.

Initial investigations indicate that the contamination is limited to the distribution part of the system, and there is no evidence of any contamination in the aquifer, the source of the drinking water itself. I appreciate the diligent work of Town personnel who, throughout the weekend, have continued to sample the system at various locations. Results of tests on these samples are expected in the next few days. Depending on the results of those tests, the Drinking Water Officer will determine the next steps.

The health and safety of our residents is our highest priority; so, until test results indicate otherwise, residents and businesses in zones 1 and 2 need to continue boiling tap water for at least one minute before drinking it.
