Area skiers still waiting for snow

It was not a happy holiday for area skiers, and if a New Year’s Day frolic in the snow is in your plans those plans might have to change.

Mount Washington still hasn’t had enough snow to open its downhill runs, although they’re still planning to go ahead with a lot of their New Year’s Eve events including a fireworks show.

Brent Curtain speaks for the Courtenay area resort.

Curtain says Mount Washington employees and businesses that rely on skiers are starting to get anxious.

The taxpayer-funded Dakota Ridge Winter Recreation Area on the Sunshine Coast, meanwhile, is closed again after a very limited opening over Christmas.  The Sunshine Coast Regional District says they need at least a meter of snow to fully open.  While lost ticket revenue isn’t as big a concern because it’s a public facility, a closed Dakota Ridge is still bad for business. Jamie Mani owns Alpha Adventures, which runs a shuttle to the Ridge:

Mani says everyone’s optimistic the snow will come, and he also says the slow start to the season doesn’t seem to be dampening people’s enthusiasm for checking out Dakota’s expanded trail network.
