Building permit backlog in Nanaimo

Springtime is construction season, but a backlog of building permits in Nanaimo is leaving people waiting longer that normal to get started.

Tom Weinreich, the City of Nanaimo’s Manager of Building Inspectors, says they’ve been inundated with building permits.

Last month, there were 179 permit applications to build single family homes. That’s up 35 per cent from the same time last year. Weinreich says permit applications are up right across the board too.

Weinreich says Building Inspectors are working hard to deal with the backlog.

He says while the average wait time is typically three to four weeks, residents should expect permit applications to take about five weeks.
