Section of Highway 101 the Subject of a Speed Survey

Gibsons council has requested a speed limit reduction from 80 to 60 kilometres an hour between Gibsons and Woodcreek Park.

At the last special council meeting, a letter from the Minister of Transporation and Infrastructure was reviewed, and she said provincial staff review speed limits on provincial highway corridors regularly.

Claire Trevena has asked ministry staff and traffic engineers to conduct a new speed survey along this portion of Highway 101 to determine if anything has changed since the last study wrapped up in 2016.

When considering speed limit changes, ministry engineers consider traffic volumes, current operating speeds, sight distances, adjacent development, number of accesses, proximity to schools, curves, slopes, and safety history.

She has indicated that, due to traffic volumes, or a lack thereof, a new highway between Langdale and Sechelt isn’t in the cards.
