Gibsons Council Moving Forward with “Check Out Bag,” Ban Bylaw

No matter where you go in this province, there always seems to be a lot of chatter about single-use plastics.

Gibsons council has voted in favour of moving ahead with the “check out bag” ban bylaw, closely resembling a single-use plastic bag ban drawn up by Victoria council, that the courts pumped the brakes on.

The BC Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the Canadian Plastic Bag Association’s challenge of the bylaw, after the Mayor of Gibsons, Bill Beamish introduced a motion on a bylaw that had many similarities to one in Victoria.

Beamish pushed for the bylaw, stating that a court ruling wasn’t reason enough to delay the motion since it wouldn’t go into force until next year.

This draft bylaw will be sent out to the public before it receives first reading.
