Memorial bench for Nemeth and Sorensen installed at Skookumchuck

Friends and family of Angie Nemeth and Beatrice Sorensen hiked into the Skookumchuck Narrows Tuesday for the unveiling of a memorial bench.

The two women were killed on June 3rd, 2012 during an RCM SAR training exercise.  As well as being an RCM SAR volunteer Nemeth was a valued member of the Coast FM team, working as our traffic and office manager.

The custom built bench sits at the North Point observation area in Skookumchuck Provincial Park, overlooking an area near where the accident occurred.  It’s hoped the thousands of visitors who walk the trail and enjoy the view from the bench will also take some time to consider the sacrifice made by these two and others who work to keep us safe on the water.

A Transportation Safety Board report on the accident has prompted several changes to how RCM SAR conducts training, and maintains and tests their vessels and equipment.
