District of Sechelt Joins Recycle BC

The District of Sechelt is now part of the Recycle BC umbrella.

Recycle BC offers financial incentives to local governments participating in this program and those incentives will offset the cost of the new organics collection program, set to start next spring.

Engineering Technologist with the District Paul Appelt said film plastic is a major problem with the curbside service.

“We have to get film plastic like those plastic bags that you get from the grocery store out of the recycling, it has to go to the depot directly,” said Appelt. “That’s probably the biggest change, the other one is that our collector used to collect things like appliances at the curb and we can no longer do that.”

Appelt said, “It’s just packaging and printed paper (that’s allowed).”

Through the Recycle BC program, only accepted material can go in the curbside totes, anything that is not on the list is considered a contaminant.

Appelt said a few local businesses will accept foiled pet bag containers.

“Go to Salish Soils are Gibsons Recycling and return foiled pet bag containers and things like that,” said Appelt.

Any containers you recycle need to be cleaned out, as uncleaned containers will be treated as contaminants.
