Chatelech Secondary students hold their own protest

While Sunshine Coast teachers walked the picket lines on Tuesday as part of the BCTF’s rotating strikes, some Chatelech Secondary students held a protest of their own. They picketed downtown Sechelt on Teredo Street to share their frustrations with the process that has seen teachers resort to walkouts and the government impose a partial lockout.

SD46 Student Trustee Maya Trueheit says students are stuck in an awkward position, because they’re not on one side or the other.

Trueheit says neither side is setting a very good example for students. She says students are frustrated by the lack of progress at the bargaining table.

Some BC students are planning a walkout of their own on Wednesday. It’s being organized through social media, including a Facebook Page called “BC Student Walkout for Students“. But the students at the protest in Sechelt on Tuesday said they don’t plan to take part, calling the plan “redundant”. Some questioned why students would be keen to lose more class time, considering the impact the rotating strikes have already had.
