Open fire bans in effect for Coastal Fire Centre

Open burning restrictions are now in place throughout the Coastal Fire Centre zone.

Marg Drysdale says the dry weather is increasing the risk of wildfires. The prohibition on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast includes all category two fires, including burning any material, piled or unpiled, stubble or grass, and burn barrels.

Campfires are still allowed, but otherwise the prohibition will remain in effect until mid-October. Drysdale says municipal burning bylaws still take precedence over the Coastal Fire Centre’s restrictions. She says anyone caught violating the prohibition could face a hefty fine.

Wildfires can be reported to the Wildfire Management Branch by calling *5555 on a cellphone or 1-800-663-5555.
