Plastic bag ban requests come in to the District of Sechelt

The District of Sechelt has fielded a couple of recent requests for a plastic bag ban.

Most recently one of the leaders of the Strawless Coast initiative asked the council where the issue of banning single-use plastics was on their radar.

Vancouver and Victoria have both implemented bans on single-use plastics.

Mayor Darnelda Siegers says following the bag ban in Victoria, that city was sued by industry.

She says while Victoria won in the courts, the decision has been appealed to the Supreme Court of BC.

Siegers says the council is waiting for that decision before considering taking action locally.

She says it’s to prevent the District from being drawn into the lawsuit as well which would be costly.
