Market group finalizes purchase of old Yacht Club building in Gibsons

The people behind the Gibsons Public Market say they’ve now finalized the purchase of the old Yacht Club building.

Papers were signed and money changed hands on December 20th.  The building is now owned by the Town of Gibsons, Community Futures, the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation and three local families.  The Town’s share was covered through 275-thousand dollars raised through a public campaign.

The group also says a  “Gibsons Public Market Society” has now been registered in Victoria.  Nicholas Sonntag is president of the Society, and one of the family investors.

In a statement announcing the deal had closed he says, “In January various Committees will be formed to work on the various economic, cultural and educational components that we plan to have in the market. We are working on the operation of the current space and designs for the renovated building which will eventually serve as the expanded permanent home for the Market… Additionally in January there will be a number of volunteer work parties to clean the current building with the intent of making it available for limited use by the end of March 2014.”
