Gibsons has launched the Cape Town Challenge

In January of 2018, Cape Town, South Africa had a water crisis that captured world headlines.

The shortage of water was so serious the community was told the city would shut off its taps and citizens would have to travel to scheduled water dispensing points to collect a daily water ration.

People were asked to cap their water use at 50 litres per household per day to stave off the measure and managed to do so until the rains came.

Mayor of Gibsons, Bill Beamish said, this Sunday, residents are being asked to take the Cape Town Challenge and experience for one day what it would be like to limit daily water use.

“Reduce their per person water use to 50 litres, for that day only. We are asking them to take the challenge that Cape Town was faced with. By reducing their per capita use to 50 litres per day they were able to stave off Day Zero, the day they would have to go to full rationing.”

Currently, the average Gibsons resident uses 250 litres a day.
