DFO in no rush to remove dead sea lion, despite complaints

There’s been a dead sea lion at the Davis Bay seawall for just about a month now.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says sea lion carcasses show up on Sunshine Coast beaches frequently.

Removing them from the foreshore is not a priority for DFO for a variety of reasons, including the fact that it is part of nature and the decaying animal adds nutrients to the ecosystem.

The District of Sechelt has been receiving calls about the carcass but officials say they are not permitted to remove anything from the beaches because it is not their jurisdiction.

The District is reporting several residents have indicated they contacted the DFO and were told it is up to Sechelt to remove it.

So, the District called and asked for permission a second time and were told, again, they cannot touch anything on the beach and can not take machinery down to the beach.

The DFO says their mandate is to let nature take its course.
