Push to ban conversion therapy

As rainbow flags fly across the province, MLA’s brought up the issue of conversion therapy in the Legislature.

Conversion therapy is an attempt to change an LGBTQ person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

There’s a growing push for a nationwide ban on the practice.

MLA for Powell River/Sunshine Coast, Nicolas Simons spoke in support of a ban for B.C. in the legislature.

“I am kind of disappointed in a way that this even has to be talked about, not because it’s not an important issue but because I think what we know as a society, we should be past this, this practice that takes place out of sight. That’s partly what this motion is meant to bring out, is this occurring in British Columbia, because if it is, it shouldn’t be.”

In the City of Vancouver businesses are prohibited from providing conversion therapy to minors and three provinces in Canada, Ontario, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia, have also taken steps to limit conversion therapy within their jurisdictions.
