Speed limit changing on Departure Bay Road

Departure Bay Road, in Nanaimo, carries as many as 11,000 vehicles per day.
The speed limit there is 50 kilometres per hour but slows to 30 at the Playground.
The City of Nanaimo is conducting a trial speed limit reduction on Departure Bay Road at Departure Bay Beach between this weekend and the Thanksgiving weekend.
During the summer, Departure Bay beach becomes one of the most popular destinations in the City for families to hang out and cool down.
The City says with all the visitors, there is a huge increase in biking and walking activity.
In an effort to improve walking and cycling comfort and safety, the City is planning to trial a 40 kilometre per hour speed limit for these busy months.
Throughout this trial, the City, ICBC, and the RCMP will work together to host education and enforcement campaigns to continue to support road safety.
