Community organizations benefit from Port of Nanaimo grants

The Port of Nanaimo has handed out nearly a dozen Community Service Account donations totaling 40,000 dollars.

The Port’s Board of Directors awarded the grants to a wide variety of groups, and the awards included the final 10,000 dollar installment of a five-year 50,000 dollar donation to the Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank.

Loaves and Fishes Executive Director Peter Sinclair says the Port funding has helped the organization purchase a much needed distribution warehouse on Irwin Street.

Sinclair says his organization serves between 3,000 and 3,500 people each month, and has grown from distributing 800,000 dollars worth of food five years ago to over 4 million in 2018.

Other Community donations were announced for the Vancouver Island University Foundation, the Nanaimo Arts Council, the Nanaimo Child Development Centre, and the Cowichan Wood Boat Society among others.
